Care home vs. Live in care: Which is right for someone living with dementia?

live in care

Dementia is a life-changing disease which progresses and worsens over time. Affecting both physical and mental aspects of your everyday routine, a dementia diagnosis can be difficult to come to terms with and requires changes to your living situation in order to keep the individual with dementia both safe and comfortable.

For many, a care home is the only option as it grants their loved one access to round-the-clock care in a safe and tailored environment which is designed with their specific needs and challenges in mind. However, dementia live in care is on the rise and is becoming a popular means of providing care and support from the comfort of one’s own home.

Here is a quickfire comparison of care home support and live in care, so that you can identify the best solution for you.

The benefits of a care home environment

Care homes are designed to facilitate a high level of care, with aspects of the design and build process all contributing towards the comfort of residents. Some of the benefits associated with this kind of care include the sense of community between residents, the access to activities and facilities they may not have otherwise, and of course the round-the-clock care that is needed as their disease progresses.

The benefits of live in care

Live in care combines much-needed care with the opportunity to stay at home – somewhere comfortable and familiar, surrounded by one’s own possessions and with access to all their nearby friends and family. It retains a semblance of normality when family members come to visit and enables the individual to hold onto their routine for as long as possible.

A live in carer takes on more than simply care tasks and will help to keep the house a home amid the daily challenges of living with dementia.

Why live in care is the best option for those with dementia

One of the most challenging aspects of dementia is the loss of memory, with the symptom not only affecting those with the disease but their family and friends around them. Live in care grants them the ability to access care in an environment which is familiar to them and comfortable for them – with those who have experienced live in care heralding its ability to ground and calm those at varying stages of the disease.

What’s more, a live in carer is specially trained to provide and cover a range of tasks as part of their role, managing different aspects of their routine including administering medication and offering both practical and emotional support. All this, while focussing on the wellbeing of the individual in their care and other family members, keeping them connected and informed throughout each day.

Live in care enables those living with dementia to retain a sense of normalcy for as long as possible, bringing much needed care to their doorstep. To find out more and to discuss your own specific care needs, get in touch today.
