Shipping Containers

Shipping containers play an essential part in the global trade industry and are used to store and transport goods on trucks, boats and trains all around the world. Because of their size and weight, moving them safely and efficiently is essential to ensure that the containers and their contents remain intact and that there is no danger to those nearby.

Here are some of the best and most used methods and equipment for shipping container lifting.

Cranes

These are the most commonly used type of lifting equipment for moving shipping containers as they can easily handle the various weights and sizes that they come in. There are two primary types of cranes used, gantry cranes and mobile lifting cranes.

  • Mobile cranes can move around the site, making them versatile and suitable for loading and unloading shipping containers from ships and trucks.
  • Gantry cranes are stationary and mostly used in ports and shipyards.

Forklifts

These are popular for lifting smaller to medium containers or moving them when there is limited space available and they have a maximum lifting capacity of 45,000lbs. They are driven by a trained operator who inserts the vehicles forks into the corner castings of the container and raise the forks which lifts it off the ground.

Hydraulic Lifting Systems

These are a popular choice for shipping container lifting and are frequently used in container terminals and shipyards. The way that they work uses a series of hydraulic cylinders within the lift system to lift the containers off the ground and make it easy to move and transport them around.

Container Lifting Jacks

These are an essential tool that work to safely and efficiently lift shipping containers and help to ensure a secure and successful lift. Container jacks are portable and cost-effective making them ideal for use in locations with a lower container volume and they come in various models that can lift anywhere from 32,000kg to 70,000kg.

Slings

Lifting slings are essential in helping to make sure that shipping containers are moved safely and efficiently whilst avoiding damage, accidents and injuries. Some of the different types of slings include;

Chain Slings are extremely strong which makes them suitable for lifting larger, heavy containers. They can be used in both horizontal and vertical lifts and are often used with spreader bars to help evenly distribute the load.

Steel Cable Slings are one of the most commonly used due the fact that that they are versatile, strong, durable and flexible. They can also be applied to various lifting applications for both vertical and horizontal lifts and are especially suited to heavy containers.

Synthetic Slings are a great choice for smaller containers or lifting in tight spaces because of their lightweight and easy to handle design. They are available in a variety of materials which are resistant to corrosion and means they are suitable for use in harsh environments.

Flat Web Slings are lightweight and easy to handle with a high strength to weight ratio. They are made from flexible polyester or nylon material that allows them to conform to the containers shape whilst still being resistant to abrasion.
